Okorusu Fluorite

The Okorusu fluorite Mine is situated to the north of Otjiwarongo. The Mine is owned by Okorusu Fluorspar (Pty) Ltd a subsidiary of the Solvay S.A Group. The Mine produces acid-grade fluorspar of 97% purity, with full mineral processing facilities on site.

Fluorite is associated with an alkaline igneous-carbonatite ring dike complex. The complex is of early Cretaceous age, which intruded into late Pre-cambrian Damara Series metasedimentary rocks. The metasedimentary rocks have been thoroughly fenitized in the vicinity of the igneous intrusives to fine-grained sodic fenites. The early main intrusion of carbonatite (sövite) is fine grained and consists almost entirely of calcite.

Glass Quartz

The Czech Geological Survey conducted geological and technological investigations on various silica-rich materials that could be used in the manufacture of glass in Namibia. This cooperation between the Czech Geological Survey and the Geological Survey of Namibia started in 2001 with the intention of building up our own glass industry using local glassmaking raw materials. Investigations identified a potentially viable source of clean hydrothermal quartz material from the farm Choaberib 47 in the Rehoboth District and dolomite material from quarries near Karibib. Test conducted thus far show the Choaberib quartz to produce high quality crystal glass with a bluish tint; this is attributed to the presence of small quantities of cobalt in the quartz. White sands from Ondangwa were also sampled and tested and were found to produce excellent clear container glass and float glass.
